Saturday, December 1 is World Aids Day and that day the world pays attention to the fact that HIV and AIDS are still a major health problem.

City of Amsterdam congratulates winners Entrepreneur awards

On November 23, 2018, the City of Amsterdam announced the winners of the Amsterdamse Ondernemersprijs (the prize for the best entrepreneur of Amsterdam) and the DAM Prijs 2018 (the most sustainable entrepreneur of the city).

The winner of the Amsterdam Entrepreneur Award is Menno Simons from Bocca-Coffee. With Bocca Coffee he was one of the first to make good coffee accessible to a wide audience.

Tiemen ter Hoeven from Roetz-Bikes is the winner of the DAM Prize 2018. The jury of the DAM Prize: 'Roetz-Bikes is a well-thought-out circular initiative with a fantastic social agenda. A nice contribution to the city to give bicycle wrecks a second life and hereby realize a saving on raw materials such as steel and aluminum. '

The Alzheimer Centre Limburg raises awareness for the prevention of dementia

By sounding the gong, Prof. Marjolein de Vugt and Prof. Frans Verhey of the Alzheimer Centre Limburg raise attention for the prevention of dementia. They do this together with Alzheimer Nederland.

The Alzheimer Centre Limburg is a cooperative venture between various healthcare institutions in Limburg Maastricht UMC+ and Maastricht University. Alzheimer Centre Limburg offers support to provide a better life for people who suffer dementia, as well as for their relatives and friends. For this purpose, it has developed a link between leading clinical research, high-quality patient care and innovative social projects.

By means of the ‘We are our own medicine’ campaign, Alzheimer Centre Limburg is taking the lead in preventing dementia.

Dementia in today's society

There is no treatment for dementia yet. The increasing aging of the population means that Alzheimer's disease is number one. 1 out of 5 Dutch people get this disease.

  • The current number of people with dementia in the Netherlands counts 270,000
  • Expected number of dementing in the Netherlands in 2055 counts 690,000

KPN celebrates achieving the finance innovation award IMA 

Today Bart Meussen, Executive Vice President Finance at KPN, opens trading at the Amsterdam exchange, to celebrate that KPN has won the Institute of Management Accountants’ (IMA) Corporate Recognition Award.

Geanne van Arkel, Head of Sustainable Development bij Interface, has been elected as ‘CSR Manager of the Year 2018’ and opened the trading day with the gong.

The CSR Manager of the Year election kicked-off in 2012. Organiser is CSR consultancy Sustainalize, together with Moonen Packaging and Sustainable Talent as their partners. The purpose of the election is to recognize the efforts and results of inspired CSR managers. Winner of the Silver FD Gazellen Award 2018 opens trading 

Mint Tower Capital is one of the fastest growing companies in the Netherlands. The hedge-fund has won a silver FD Gazellen award on 6 November 2018, thanks to a growth in revenues of nearly 93 percent in two years’ time, as well as an increase in staff; from 9 to 25 FTEs. On this occasion Joris Hoedemaekers opens trading at Euronext Amsterdam.

Every year, Het Financieele Dagblad hands out the FD Gazellen Awards to companies that have grown at least 20% in revenues over the past three (financial years). In addition, the FD Gazelles are profitable in the final year of the surveyed period.

This year, the rules have been tightened. A company should have a minimum turnover of € 250,000. The three turnover categories are now: small (€ 250,000 to € 2 million), medium-sized (€ 2 million to € 10 million) and large (more than € 10 million). Furthermore, the ranking has been adjusted. In addition to revenue growth, this year staff growth and the profit margin will also be taken into account.

A total of 287 companies were awarded with the title FD Gazelle, as a reward for their above-average growth. This concerns companies from; North Holland, South Holland and Flevoland, that grew at least 20% in turnover over the past three financial years.

Save the Children kicks-off Christmas Jumper Day by sounding the gong

On 14 December Save the Children, an organization active in over 120 countries that helps children in need, organizes a ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ to raise money and create awareness. The money raised will be used to help reunite refugee children with their parents, as well as collect food parcels and provide warm clothing, blankets and shoes.  

On this day, thousands of people everywhere in the Netherlands are putting on their ugliest Christmas sweater for a good cause, trying to gain as much attention as possible.

Actors Esmee van Kampen and Eric Bouwman, ambassadors for Save the Children, will help make a lot of noise for this charity cause with the sounding of the gong.

This year, the eight edition of the Pensioen3daagse (3 day pension fair), initiated by platform Money Wise (Wijzer in geldzaken) takes place. The ministry of Social Affairs and Employment will start the Pensioen3daagse by visiting the Amsterdam exchange and sounding the gong.

The purpose of this three-day fair is to promote financial resilience at a later age. Money Wise developed a tool in this context ‘’What should I do for my retirement?’’ that enables people to make an assessment of their situation later in life. IMC Weekendschool sounds the gong at Euronext for their 20th anniversary

The IMC weekend school Foundation has been providing additional education for young people between the ages of ten and fourteen years old, from neighbourhoods where this is most needed.

Since the start in Amsterdam Zuidoost, the weekend school has grown immensely; covering  ten branches in the big cities and with an alumni network of 2600 former pupils. They already offer their education during school hours, at twenty regular primary schools across the Netherlands (IMC Basis) and at eight locations for newcomers children in international language classes (IMC on Tour). Year to date, they reach 2400 pupils from 38 different locations on a weekly basis. Their initial concept is still at heart: stimulating the curiosity of young individuals by introducing them to enthusiastic professionals who will introduce them to their business.

The Amsterdam Exchange markets are opened by broker firm LYNX Nederland, to mark its strong growth, and its recent introduction of a new lower pricing structure. Sander Schwanen, branch manager of LYNX Netherlands, sounds the gong to celebrate.

Two years after the Market Abuse Regulation (MAR) came into effect, InsiderLog together with Clifford Chance, is hosting a seminar for companies listed at the Euronext Amsterdam. From 20 August to 24 August, the gong ceremony at Beursplein 5 focuses on the activity and entrepreneurship in the various regions in the Netherlands. During the Week of the Regional Entrepreneurship, Euronext highlights the important role of regional development agencies (ROMs). Aart Slobbe, co-ordinating policy officer and responsible for the shareholdings of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate in the ROMs, opens the Amsterdam exchange with a sounding of the gong. He does this in the presence of some involved from the Ministry of Economic Affairs at the regional development companies.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, together with regional authorities (usually provinces), is a shareholder and subsidiary of six ROMs (NOM, East NV, LIOF, BOM, Impuls and IQ). The ROMs link national innovation and top sector policy to regional economic policy and are important for (regional) services to innovative SMEs. ROMs guide and finance innovations of SMEs and contribute to the economic growth and employment of the region. In addition, the ROMs have three important tasks. The ROMs play an important role in the Netherlands in providing risk-bearing capital to start-ups and financing young companies. The capacity of the joint ROMs amounts to almost € 325 million, apart from the additional resources made available by the provinces. The ROMs are therefore one of the largest providers of risk capital in this market segment in the Netherlands. In addition, ROMs connect startups, SMEs and large companies with each other, building on joint ventures, new clusters, programs and business consortia. Finally, ROMs attract foreign companies, which leads to additional employment and innovation and makes it possible for SMEs to make the leap to international markets.

Trading is opened by the Innovation Fund Noord-Holland, which was founded by the province of Noord-Holland, the holding companies of the University of Amsterdam, the Amsterdam UMC and the University of Applied Sciences (HvA) and Sanquin.

Entrepreneurs in the province of Noord-Holland in small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups that originate from the knowledge institutions can receive a loan for the development of a sustainable and innovative product or process. The Innovation Fund provides loans during the so-called Proof-of-Concept phase of the development of a new product or process. In this phase there is a detailed idea on paper that has to be put into practice, for example by building a prototype. Practice shows that traditional financiers are hesitant to invest in the early phase. That is why the province of Noord-Holland, together with a number of important knowledge institutions, has set up this Innovation Fund. Special attention is given to initiatives in the areas of circular economy, sustainable mobility and energy transition and in the area of ​​health care. In the first phase, 12.5 million euros is available, of which the European Union contributes 5 million. In total, 21 million is available in the long term. The province of North Holland contributes a total of 8 million euros.

The national government also sees this importance and contributes 35 million euros to this. Although there are economic opportunities in Zeeland for the taking, there are also a number of significant tasks. The Structural Reinforcement and Employment Committee presented the opportunities and threats for Zeeland. This advice led to a contribution of 35 million euros from the government for economic structure-strengthening projects. One of these projects is the Zeeland Participation Fund. This means that entrepreneurs can soon call on 6.5 million euros. The fund provides risk capital for growing companies with a substantial impact on the Zeeland economy and employment.
